Galen Leather TwinFlip Review: Is the $85 Pen Case Worth It?

$85 is a lot of money, but there's a benefit to just having a high quality piece of leather that you're going to enjoy using and that is going to care for your pens.

I've been using it for about a week now, and I compare it to my all-time favorite, the Lochby Quattro.

These two products were sent to me by Galen Leather to review.

What you actually get

It is meant for five pens, and I have it loaded to capacity. I was trying to fit as many as I could, based on what I usually carry on my Lochby Quattro, but it is meant for five pens. Right now I have it loaded with four fountain pens and the multi pen, which is a little thicker of a pen.

When you open the whole case, you do have space for the five pens. It's a pretty generous hold.

At the bottom you do get a couple slots for cards and a bigger slot for something larger.

Sometimes I put cards or sticky notes.

My first impression: the leather is very soft.

I really wanted to have a leather case for my pens, and this has fulfilled that. The leather came pretty soft. It wasn't very stiff, but it's starting to soften a lot more.

I'm not really worried about scratching the leather. I like using my things and that doesn't bother me.

If it does, just know that the clips may just leave some marks. That's going to be part of using it and using it how I enjoy it.

This Deep Cognac color runs about $85 at the moment. It ships overseas, so shipping may be a little more.

You can tell this is high quality. It is handmade and the leather just feels really great and soft in the hands.

The stitching is made wonderfully. There are really no signs of these breaking apart. It looks like it was well taken care of from the first stitch to the last.

The quality that you get from their products is very, very high.

Tall pens vs regular size

If I grab something like this, Midori dots from Midori, which do fit inside this Lochby Quattro, it is quite tall and it does not fit comfortably.

Keep that in mind. If you have a tall pen, it may not fit there.

If it's a regular size, talking about like this TWSBI Eco, this Monteverde, pens of that size do fit pretty well there.

The beauty of just having the five separate slots is you're not really having pens that touch each other. So they stay very nicely separated. You're not scratching anything.

So far this has been my daily driver.

I've been really enjoying especially the high-quality leather.

The leather sounds and smells beautiful. Super high-quality leather, and I've really been enjoying this so far.

The A5 cover they sent with it

They also sent this A5 cover by Galen Leather as well. This is Crazy Horse.

Super soft to the touch, and I am super excited for this to patina. The color green is my favorite.

It's a really nice deep green, similar to this Sarasa Olive, similar to this Sarasa vintage pen.

It just feels really great in the hand. The Crazy Horse grain feels rough, but at the same time premium, which is a hard balance to achieve.

It connects with a couple of flaps for the notebook. It does have a slot for maybe something longer or a card.

It does not have like a pocket. It's just a slot that you can stick things there.

This one runs about $54. For the quality of leather, I think that's a great price.

There are older covers that cost north of $100. $54 sounds like a great price. This slim one does not add much bulk to the notebook itself.

TwinFlip vs the Lochby Quattro

These two cost real money. $85 can be a lot of money for a lot of people.

If I'm carrying some pens that are high quality and I want to not scratch them, it is a small price to pay. There are definitely cheaper alternatives out there.

For me, just the leather and the feeling are worth it. If I'm enjoying the things that I'm using, I'm gonna use them a lot more.

If you are the type of person that is looking to store up to five pens, this is a great product. It holds them perfectly. It doesn't scratch them.

It has earned a spot so far in my lineup.

Or you enjoy maybe something more rugged, like the wax canvas, the Quattro that can carry maybe twice as much if you really load this up.

Or you're the type of person that just picks up a pen, puts it in the pocket, and calls it good.
